The America we live in (or are from)

From ... Robert Reich

I just got a call from my father’s auto insurer, telling me he’s behind on his payment. I explained he died in February.

“He still needs to pay for the last two months,” said the man from the insurance company.
“But he can’t pay. He’s deceased,” I said.
“He owes $348.62, for the period April 24 to June 24,” he said.
“But he didn’t drive then. He died in February. No one has driven his car since he died.”
“Well, someone has to pay or his insurance will be cancelled, and it will hurt his credit rating.”
“I’m sure he’d be okay if it’s cancelled,” I said. “And I don’t think he cares about his credit rating.”
“Are you trying to be smart with me?” asked the man from the insurance company.
“No, I’m just trying to tell you that my father is deceased and he doesn’t need car insurance.”
“Have you cancelled his car registration?”
“No, I haven’t got around to that.”
“Well, you should. If he’s deceased, he shouldn’t have a registration.”
“I understand.”
“Nobody’s supposed to have a registration if they’re not paying their auto insurance.”
“Right.”
“So, are you going to pay the insurance that’s due?”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Then it’s an illegal car.”
“But it won’t be on the road.”
“Still illegal.”
“Sorry.”
“That could be a problem for him.”
“He’s no longer with us.”
“I know. You made that clear. I’m referring to his estate.”
“I don’t see how.”
“Well, let’s say the state of Florida imposes a penalty for having a car registered in his name but no insurance. And let’s say that penalty holds up any legal proceedings in resolving …”
“May I ask you a personal question?”
“Personal?”
“Who do you support for President?
“For President?”
“I don’t mean to pry.”
[chuckling] “Oh, no problem,” he said.
“You have a favorite candidate?” I asked.
“As a matter of fact, I do,” he said.
“And who is it?”
“That Trump fella.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, Trump. Good man. No bullshit.”

Biosfera Sierra de Manantlan

This is a beautiful area and the most beautiful are not real easy to access. I've seen a very little bit from the Colima side and considerably more from the Jalisco side. Cuzalapa (the coffee town) is part of it as well as the 3-4 little towns on the way to Durazno. There is a road that goes from the Jalisco side over the top and down into Colima but I don't have the car to try it in. The biological station, sponsored by UNAM I think, is accessed further up highway 80.

Did you know? The Biosphere Reserve Sierra de Manantlán is included in the International Network of Biosphere Reserves UNESCO MAB program. It is an important bird conservation site and is one of the priority mountains for Conservation in Mexico.

The Avacado that never got ripe

I don't remember it ever taking so much time to mature. I've had this one for over a week and it's still very hard. I had to really work with a spoon to extract the meat and don't think I can mash it for guacamole. Decided to give it the juice of two limes, cover it and wait a little longer.

All kinds of info on the Internet on how to ripen an avocado but I didn't think it was necessary because it looked so healthy. Paper bag (where do you find one) and put it in a dark place. Maybe next time but hope there is not a next time. Now I'm hungry :}

Confessions of a conservative radio talk-show host

Donald Trump is off the rails. He is a train wreck. It’s not just his antics and childish behavior that has me so put off, it’s his failure to improve as a candidate.

After nine months on the campaign trail, I expected Trump to fully grasp the issues and have in-depth policy solutions to our problems. Yet he still is “winging it.” He has failed to surround himself with top-notch, respected experts to craft a legitimate conservative platform. The reality is now clear: Trump has no depth, and he fails to grasp even the most basic conservative principles.

I fell victim to my own hatred. Donald Trump offered me a vehicle to stick it to the bloviating bureaucrats I despise. I dedicated my life to exposing self-promoting career politicians and their love of big government programs. Trump was the guy who was going to scare the hell out of the “establishment,” the guy who was going to turn Washington on its head. So I voted with anger in my heart. I gave my vote to Trump with the expectation he would find his way by putting smart constitutional conservatives by his side. Trump didn’t find his way; he got lost.

Sadly, I did exactly what my mother always warned me not to do. I made an important decision while in an emotionally fragile state of anger and despair. My vote for Trump amounted to a vendetta against the ruling class of DC career politicians. I made a mistake.

Nothing left of the GOP

From Robert Reich on Facebook

My friend, a former Republican member of Congress, told me “Trump is a horse’s ass and every Republican in Washington knows it. But Party divisions are now so deep – libertarians against social conservatives, Tea Partiers against corporate executives and Wall Street – that Trump is the only thing we have. His brainless bigotry will destroy what’s left of the national GOP, but there’s so little left it doesn't matter. Today's Republican Party operates in state legislatures and congressional districts. It’s no longer a national party at all.”
What do you think?

Hurricane Season

A couple more days to go (15th) to more or less mark the beginning of another season. We don't expect any weather on that day or anytime soon. Heck, we haven't had any rain for months.

In 2016, for the Pacific coast, Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (Servicio Metrológico Nacional, SMN) is expecting 17 named storms: 8 tropical storms, 5 moderate hurricanes (1 or 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale), and 4 severe hurricanes (3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale).

Trump the Grump

Without spray tan or hair .... Trump is just your Grumpy Neighbor

Kari Rafayko Hadley Looks like he belongs in a trailer park -- which is good, because that's how he acts!

Kim Cowan Actually he looks better that way. But his looks aren't the issue. His dangerous ignorance, bigotry, condescending attitude, and horrible ideas are what worries me. And the fact that people vote for a shallow, arrogant, ignorant, loud-mouthed fool worries me even more.

Cleaning a Pulpo

Cleaning a Pulpo (octopus) and cooking

A neighbor fisherman brought home an octopus and it was decided to prepare it for dinner. We took it out to the washing station and she waited until I got my camera

First you take out the ink sack and the rest of the insides - then you start scrubbing. Lots of scrubbing and rinsing to remove the slime

Finally she removed the beak (boca) and a few small parts of the head

She boils it for an hour with garlic and onions and cuts it up in small chucks. This was fried in garlic butter, a little salt and worcestershire sauce. Veracruzana or diabla are other ways to cook it. Also makes good cevichi. Crisp tortillas, lime and jalapenos on the side

Trump's Birth Name

Trump is Trash and the US does not have to be

After the petty-miserable Trump Tweeted Jon Stewart's Jewish name in his usual derogatory way .... Jon just had to come back - you know!!.  F**KFACE CLOWNSTICK

Too many brilliant take-downs for Clown Donald I just can't resist posting them.

Stewart was not the only comedic voice to take aim at Trump today, either – Jeb Lund of RollingStone and the Guardian published an amusing denouncement of the entire election cycle today, criticizing the utter absurdity of the media’s coverage and the flagrant disregard of truth and facts by all sides. “Donald Trump [is] an orange sorbet mistakenly served to the world with a discarded Eighties New Wave wig atop it” who is “tweeting like a teen troll sadist with zero object permanence.” He had no doubts that the Republican Party would fall in line behind Trump, because the Republican “principled class…are the cinder block on a makeshift front-lawn auto-body shop: dumb as a brick and capable of supporting anything.”

Republicans to change a light bulb ?

How many Republicans does it take to change a light bulb? None, Republicans seem to be alright with being in the dark.

Do you think the GOP would stop it's obstructionism with Clinton in office?  No way ..... all they know is NEGATIVE. That is why Trump has taken over.

James Michael Parrent Democrats; be careful. Do not become complacent. Help get out the blue vote. Vote Democrat from the Court House to the White House.

E. Mark Anderson This election cycle is is not just about POTUS. It also about removing 24 obstructionist senators and 234 congressman up for election. We either go blue no matter who or continue with the obstruction and drumpf. Vote Bernie, Vote Hillary, true blue is the right thing to do.

Dump the Trump

Great post from Facebook

Elizabeth Darlene Trump is a true American Conservative. He is the kind of leader that Neo-Cons, White Racists, Fundamentalists, Evangelicals, Economic Conservatives, and Libertarian Conservatives (90% of all Conservatives) have been looking for.

He proposes the solutions that Conservatives love. It doesn’t matter WHAT the problem is and it doesn’t matter IF there is a problem at all. Here is what the hayseeds believe Trump is going to do.:

1. Destroy the federal government as we know it.
2. Kick butt
3. Fire a bunch of people
4. Get rid of Obamacare and watch the poor die. My previously unaffordable insurance is down to $85/month. My car insurance, from Insurance Panda, is now just $25/month. Under Trump, healthcare will be $500/month or more.
5. Make the lives of poor kids, the sick, and the elderly worse than they already are.
6. Drop a bunch of bombs on some colored people in some country somewhere.
7. Promise to support immigration reform after the next election.
8. Cut taxes on the rich.

Then, according to Conservatives, a Conservative Utopia will inevitably emerge from the ashes due to an indisputable, unnamed rule of world history that no historian has ever heard of.

Bette MidlerTweets Trump

Joseph Heller, Catch-22

It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.

Little white things and black soot

Zote is a non-detergent natural soap

The last time I did this it was on tomatoes and white flies. Didn't have much luck. I have no tomatoes now but my limes are really suffering. Little white things that look like eggs, black soot on most leaves and some leaves are curling unnaturally. What worries me is you are supposed to spray both sides of the leaves and my trees are a tightly packed maze of branches. My pruning so far has only been to cut the suckers that shoot straight up.

So I pulled out what was left of my last batch, ran it through a strainer and added water in a gallon bucket. Then I put the bar of soap in and will leave it over night. All sites say a 1% solution so I may need to make this a 3-gallon batch. How the heck do you measure 1%. Liquid soap like Dr. Bronners would be easier.

Homemade Insecticidal Soap Recipe Variations

Like any other home remedy, there are as many variations on this recipe as there are gardeners! You can also try:

Diluted Solution: If the spray causes damage or burns your plant foliage, cut the amount of soap in half and try a 1% solution. This is the concentration usually found in commercial sprays. The lighter solution might be less effective but is gentler on plants.

Cooking Oil: To help the solution stick a little longer, add two tablespoons of light cooking oil (such as corn, canola, olive, or safflower) per gallon of water to the mix.

Vinegar: To make a spray that also targets powdery mildew, add a teaspoon of cider vinegar per gallon of water to the mix.

Garlic or Pepper: To help repel chewing insects, add a teaspoon of ground red pepper and/or garlic per gallon of water to the mix.

Bar Soap: For a less-exact recipe, drop a bar of pure soap (such as organic bar soap or Ivory) into a gallon of water and leave it overnight. Remove the bar and shake well before spraying.
The construction of the house finished in April 2011 and I'm pretty much settled in. As of March 2014 I'm in preparation for rain mode for this coming summer. That includes sealing and painting things and dealing with drainage issues from last year.
