Can't say I really appreciate their choice of music
but it's a cool story
Three heavy metal loving sisters have been tipped for musical super-stardom after signing their first ever record deal - and their bass player is just 10-years-old.
Consisting of Daniela Villarreal (Dany), 16, Paulina (Pau), 13, and Alejandra (Ale), 10, The Warning caught the eye of talent scouts with their online videos.
With Dany on lead guitar and vocals, Pau on drums and Ale on bass, the girls uploaded covers of Metallica, AC/DC and Guns 'N' Roses to YouTube.
After signing their first deal, the siblings, from Monterrey, a city in northeast Mexico, have just released their debut EP, Escape The Mind.
The latest English assignment is sing this song in English. Yari is 12 years old and in her first year of Secondary School. I don't believe she has to memorize it, just sing it. Lyrics are easy to find but the video qualities vary a lot. Peter Paul and Mary was not real clear and Trini Lopez made it a whole other thing. There were a couple copies of this Brothers Four song on YouTube so I downloaded it and put it on my IPhone for her.
This would have been an extremely difficult assignment for me at that age .... even though Spanish is a much more musical language compared to non rhythmic English, IMO. Her mom was over last night and was writing down words phonetically while I read them but that became a lot of work and we didn't know the value. I'll read to Yari and see what works for her. I think I'll skip an explanation of "But the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat" because I don't understand it except it's not sweet. Odd choice for a simile but it's just a song.
Lemon Tree by the Brothers Four
When I was just a lad of ten, my father said to me,
"Come here and take a lesson from the lovely lemon tree."
"Don't put your faith in love, my boy," my father said to me,
"I fear you'll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree."
Chorus:
Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet,
But the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet,
But the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat.
One day beneath the lemon tree, my love and I did lie,
A girl so sweet that when she smiled, the stars rose in the sky.
We passed that summer lost in love, beneath the lemon tree,
The music of her laughter hid my father's words from me.
Chorus
One day she left without a word, she took away the sun.
And in the dark she left behind, I knew what she had done.
She left me for another, it's a common tale but true,
A sadder man, but wiser now, I sing these words to you.
Not sure who passed these articles along about Gabriel Figueroa but both have related video documentaries included. The BBC article is the most recent and in English. BBC tells you how to embed their video but it didn't work for me. Watch it on the site link. The Cultura Colectiva article is a year old, in Spanish and had a YouTube video. Thanks whom ever sent these links and for the addition to my Mexican movie knowledge.
The appeal to me was I've been collecting old Mexican black and white movies for years and I have a few of Figueroa's without knowing he was the cinematographer. Looking back through a few movies and his stark surrealism really stands out. He worked with Luis Buñuel on a number of movies like Los Olvidados and has more great ones like La Perla and Macario below. Actually a surprising number of complete classic and not so classic movies on YouTube.
And I do mean "like". They can play these things over and over for days. The songs by Hermanos Vazquez and CoCo No by Roberto Jr. ... and Gangnam Style that I posted a video of a few days ago.
They have a couple of them on their Cel phones and I wanted to put a few on mine except I hate ITunes which is usually for managing music and videos on IPhones and other Apple products. You install ITunes on your PC and it takes over ... won't use it!!
I knew about YTD Video Downloader to download videos from YouTube. It also converts files to different formats after you have downloaded. Original YouTube is in .FLV and my IPhone needs MP3/4. Then I did a search for an ITunes replacement and found CopyTrans Managerworks perfectly, very small in size ... and both programs are Freeware. Now my phone is the favorite because of the big screen compared to theirs.
Neighbors loaned me this 4 disk set and I'm only thru the first 2 episodes of the series on disk one. It seems to be mostly about music but is also what people do after a city is devastated. If you are in the US I believe you can watch the whole series but it's blocked in Mexico (we don't count). Great insight on what to do when the world ends from people who lived on the street - day to day.
From Wikipedia Treme is an American television drama series created by David Simon and Eric Overmyer that premiered on April 11, 2010 on HBO. It takes its name from Tremé, a neighborhood of New Orleans. The series begins three months after Hurricane Katrina where the residents of New Orleans, including musicians, chefs, Mardi Gras Indians, and other New Orleanians try to rebuild their lives, their homes and their unique culture in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane.
This is the best video I could find ... but do check around on YouTube for some of the music cuts. Great stuff
The construction of the house finished in April 2011 and I'm pretty much settled in. As of March 2014 I'm in preparation for rain mode for this coming summer. That includes sealing and painting things and dealing with drainage issues from last year.
